珍珠岩是一種惰性的、特定種類的膨脹火山岩，其特征是高孔隙率和強穩定性，是透氣性和排水性俱佳的材料。它是通過熱膨脹工藝加工而獲得的，在栽培基質中添加珍珠岩可以改善根系的氧化作用，並保證其結構的持久穩定性。經試驗證明2-6毫米粒度的效果最佳。
珍珠岩是營養土混合的理想原料之一（配比10%-40%）；唯一要注意的是使用之前需要充分均勻攪拌，以避免植物根系生長不均勻的問題。
